Show Notes Transcript Chapter Markers

Believe in yourself is the mantra we often hear, but how do you truly harness the power of belief to fuel your journey to success? It's a question my co-host RJ Campbell and I, Dustin Hoag, tackle in this thought-provoking episode. We pull back the curtain on our own experiences as business dads and share our perspectives on how our mindset, especially when it comes to belief, has played a pivotal role in achieving our goals. Whether it's crafting passionate marriages, nurturing meaningful relationships, or just being healthier mentally and physically, we discuss how belief becomes the catalyst for these transformations.

We also shed light on the role of belief in goal-setting and time management. Drawing parallels from our own lives and studying successful individuals, we delve deep into how to build self-belief and how it can shape your path to success. But caution! We also discuss the potential pitfalls of misplaced belief and how it can lead you astray. Join us as we dissect how belief, in the right things, can be that powerful force that drives you to the finish line of your goals.

Coach Dustin:

What is going on, guys? And welcome to another episode of the Balance Business. Dad, I'm your host, coach Dustin, and with me is always the seasoned, the distinguished Mr RJ Campbell. Rj, how are you doing today?

RJ Campbell:

I feel like a rock star today, and I don't even know why.

Voiceover:

It's just a good Tuesday or Wednesday.

RJ Campbell:

Hell, I don't even know what it is.

Coach Dustin:

It's Tuesday and you're getting the vacation vibes from me, because, for the people that are watching us, I'm not in the studio today, in the home office, because I am leaving for vacation about 90 minutes after this recording and I am super excited. It's fall break and I'm excited. I've been on vacation brain for the last 24 hours, so really, really excited. So let's just jump right in.

RJ Campbell:

I don't get a fall break anymore because my kids are grown. Well, take one. That's it. I'm going to take one. Actually, I'm going to take one at the end of this week too.

Voiceover:

I can't take these Exactly, you do.

RJ Campbell:

Hell yeah, I'm going on a motorcycle rally Thursday through Sunday, so we're both in vacation. Brain, you'll be lucky of this thing last more than six minutes.

Coach Dustin:

Guys, we're going to jump right into it, and how I like to start every episode is to put RJ on the spot. So, rj, what have you learned this past week?

RJ Campbell:

What I learned this past week is what kicked off the creation of this particular podcast episode Belief. You got to have strong belief in something I don't want to give too much away, but then good things follow. That's where the title came up with, or the subject that. Justin can tell you what that is, but it was. This was business related to and trying to figure out where we were going.

Coach Dustin:

Yeah. So I think what we want to start out with is you know, we've never wanted to take this stance where we know everything and we're here to help everyone. Now we're here to help everyone, but not because we've known everyone and we've completed the journey. We are on the journey to be a balanced business dad as well, meaning that we want to have the thriving business that doesn't control us, the passionate marriage, kids that adore us, meaningful relationships with our friends, being healthier physically and mentally. We want all that as well, and we are striving towards that on a daily basis. So we understand that there might be people that are not are a couple steps behind us, but there's also a lot of people ahead of us in this too. So we want to take the knowledge that we're getting during this journey that we have and help the people to come up with us, because all ships rise, right, Isn't that the same? All ships rise.

RJ Campbell:

All ships rise with. Yeah, all ships lift with the rising tide.

Coach Dustin:

Yeah, exactly. So a lot of words, yeah, but I have a coach, because all good coaches have a coach, which is one of my lines. But my coaching call recently we talked a lot about belief and we were talking about truth things and you know the question I had in my head which is funny because coaches will never tell you this but it's hey, how do I get this done, how do I get this done? And the responses do you believe in it? And it shook me right, because it's Coaches are really good at that.

RJ Campbell:

Yes, sir, sorry I interrupted you on that one, but that's what I listened to him when he's coaching and I'm eavesdropping on his calls. Yeah Just, could it just rock in people's world with that simple question, with one line, one line.

Coach Dustin:

And the lesson of this episode and the lesson of my coaching call was, once you have belief, the how shows up, and not that a light shines down on whatever it is and saying this is exactly how you do it and it's not simple, but you're committed, once you have that belief, because your mindset to go figure out the how.

RJ Campbell:

Yeah. Yeah, it was an eye-opener for me too. And this is just this time of the year. It's October, so Q4 has started. Dustin and I are doing planning for 2024. We have a planning meeting on Monday, so there are a lot of ideas that we have of things related to this podcast, the Dad Up Council, the whole balanced business, dad move, but also the other businesses that we have Right, and there's a lot of man. How are we going to do that? And this was hey. If you believe in it strongly enough, you are fully committed to how we'll follow.

Coach Dustin:

Yeah, it's like damn, there's actually science around it, and the science is between your conscious and your unconscious mind, because once you believe something, you become it. You become that person who does this, and when you become that person, your mind starts showing you the different ways and the different things to do at whatever we're trying to do. Right, it's called and I hope I'm getting this right but the reticulating and activating system in your brain, oh, the rest.

RJ Campbell:

The rest Meaning what If he screwed that up? Just you know, add a comment on the Facebook page.

Coach Dustin:

Yes, meaning what your brain is. A Google search engine, meaning what you put in it, which I believe. This your brain is going to show you that, just like when I see Ford F-150s, you know there's no other car on the road. In my opinion, it's just up to the F-150s, because that's what I drive. So that's what my brain sees, right. So, anyway, that was kind of a long tangent there, but belief brings you the how. So, arjun, I know you took some notes. Let's talk about belief.

RJ Campbell:

Belief Mindset. It was one of the things that came up for me. Okay, that I wrote down. You know, you meet.

RJ Campbell:

I was actually just the other day I'm listening to a pastor who was talking and this guy had, I mean, he was extremely passionate, obviously you know about his walk with Christ, but I mean it was just one thing after another that he was throwing out. And that's where it keyed in with this. Like he believed so strongly in his message, his passion and what he was being driven to do that it just never stopped. His how was just going and I'm listening to him thinking where did you come up with all of this stuff? I mean this is like the ultimate content creator. Well, that's his mindset. I mean he has such a mindset about his passion you could tell that's just where he was. The how was just following. It was just coming out with one after another. But so now your mindset, now you believe so strongly in whatever this is. You know how do you have a relationship with your kids? It could be business oriented, it could be with your marriage.

RJ Campbell:

Once you have that strong belief in what you want to accomplish, man, that's your mindset. Your mindset has switched to. It's just that You're so focused on that and you now believe. You believe yourself. You believe what you've been telling yourself. It sounds so simple in its own way. I mean, you're committed. You're not just interested, you're committed. At that point, you truly believe it. Yes, I believe this is where we are going with this podcast. I know it now, I can see it. It may take me a hundred tries, but they're going to start. They're just going to start following the first one. May not be perfect, but your mindset is there. You believe you committed.

Coach Dustin:

And it's so funny. What is the first two letters in believe? B B. Excuse me, I think we've actually done an episode on B Do have before when we talked about this and we're talking about the mindset. But the mindset is I'm becoming that person. Right, we have to be that person that has the successful podcast or the successful business or being a successful husband or having a passionate marriage. You have to be that person first, because then, once you be it, in your mind, the set, the how to do it, is going to show up. Right, I go back with my journey. When I did journey to the fight and went on that health journey, it was I had to become the identity of an athlete to be able to get through, to work out today and eat like I was supposed to and things like that. Right, I had to be that person to do that. So I love that mindset is such a part of belief.

RJ Campbell:

Boy. And then what follows behind mindset, what I am so good at setting all the time? Tell me more. I believe we're talking about goals. Dustin makes fun of me because I don't do goals Never have. We're working through that's right. We're working through that, though we're going to blame it on somebody in my past.

Coach Dustin:

But, no.

RJ Campbell:

So now that mindset you have it, you believe it's so much easier to set those goals. They become more obvious and more definitive. Yeah, and I think that's just that next thing, cause now you can visualize, you believe so strongly in it, I think it's easier to come up with the goals. I know it is, and that's something where I've always struggled, and that is coming up with the goals, yeah. So I think when that now you just so thoroughly believe in it, it comes to the how, the how are the goals? Okay, this is where we need to take this Correct. It's the doing part.

Coach Dustin:

If you go back to BDU has the goal part, is the doing part Right? I have to go do what my mindset and my belief tells me that I'm doing. I have to go do. I have to go work out like I was supposed to. I have to go have the date nights. I have to go have the time with my kids, whatever it may be. It's interesting because this belief in this house shows up in every single one of these pillars. It does when our goal is to dad up. In every single one of these pillars we start with belief. The house do show up on how to dad up.

RJ Campbell:

You have to fully well, if you want to do it and you want to do it right, you have to truly believe with all your heart that it can be done. That's when the house starts to show up. You're doing 2024 planning. Now we're back to our business and you say I want to double sales or I want to increase revenue 50% bottom line revenue in 2024. Question number one is do you believe that you can do that? Yeah, and I'm like, well, yeah, I think we can. Is your business already so big that doubling it is a monumental task? Or do you see that Can you do? You see, yes, I believe we can double revenue next year. It's a new business. We can double revenue, okay, yeah, then you'd be surprised how the house start. Okay, so we truly believe it. You'll start to see that picture of how you do it. Absolutely, the house start coming.

RJ Campbell:

It will start coming.

Coach Dustin:

And what's so interesting about that is, you know, we know that our first pillar as a balanced business that we focus on is faith. And I'm going to stay faith with a capital F, because in our world, you know, god and our Christianity comes before anything else. Right, our belief in God and our faith capital F. But really what you're saying is you have to have faith or beliefs in your own vision to hit those goals, which I love that right. I do a lot of vision planning, especially this time of year, with a lot of coaching clients, and that's what we start with. Do you believe that this can happen? And I'm not saying it's wrong or right, I'm not going to say that you should or you shouldn't, but I've always. I've coached a lot of people and they would always. The first question they ask me is this an unrealistic goal?

RJ Campbell:

So that's. I asked you that question, yeah. So when we're talking here or working with your coaching clients, when you're doing a vision board, do you want realistic beliefs on there?

Coach Dustin:

I want them to believe. But there's no word realistic, because my response to that is there's no unrealistic goals, there's just unrealistic activity to get there right. Meaning, if you want to go from a million dollars to two million dollars in revenue, okay, that's not unrealistic because people out there have, but how hard and what are. What are you committed to doing for that Right on? Probably the next episode that we're gonna have is probably gonna Talk about the how to manage your time and how to hold an accountable, so we're not gonna go into that too much now. But people saying I want to do this, okay, show me the plan for you to do this again. It's not an unrealistic goal, it's just unrealistic expectations that you have on what might have to go into getting that goal.

RJ Campbell:

And then the plan will turn it into Okay, that's not realistic, I know you hate to use that term. So somebody has a part-time flipping business in real estate and he says, by the end of the next year I want to own an NFL team. The most recent one just sold for seven point two billion dollars. Right, okay, that is fine to put that as a goal. Now this is gonna be a fun plan. Yeah, how do you get? How do you get there in 12 months exactly? So that's not really the idea of what you want. I'm assuming on a vision board, maybe that's your five-year vision Maybe not 12 months.

RJ Campbell:

Yeah, right exactly and I'm always.

Coach Dustin:

I Want to more vision, the habits and believe in the habits of what's gonna get me there. Right, because time is something we don't control, right? So if you want that NFL team, it might take 20 years. You can't control that because there might people that won't meet with you for 10 years. You never know, right, and this is the person who have to the NFL Commissioner. If you call them up, you're probably not gonna go on his calendar.

RJ Campbell:

He doesn't answer my calls. I've tried right, but if you call him, every day for the next 15 years. Right, right, you're gonna wear him down exactly.

Coach Dustin:

So it's the habits to get to that certain goal and it's kind of different, different, definitely a different episode, but but that's where the belief comes in.

RJ Campbell:

I mean, if you put something on your vision board that's obviously so ridiculous, you're not going to be fully believing that's gonna happen anyway by the end of the next year, I want to own six Ferraris.

RJ Campbell:

That's pretty good. Could you drive a pinto, right? But let's work towards that. So it's you. You're not believing that anyway, so that's what we're saying. It would your, for what you're visualizing is stuff that you, you are, you truly believe. You believe this is going to happen. Now, you, now they'll develop the plan and and figure out the how you know I miss.

Coach Dustin:

This is where it gets really, really interesting, because the question I get a lot of the times is how do you come up with belief? Where does belief come from? And to me I don't believe there's anything new under the sun. Does someone own an NFL team? Yes, and I'm sure RJ knows how many. There are 32, 32. So 32 people do own an NFL team. Okay. Do people own six Ferraris? Absolutely, they do. So let's go study, let's go say first of all, somebody does it all right now, I know it's a believable somebody can do this Right. And let's go six Ferraris, because that's, that's a little bit more realistic. I'm not realistic, but you know what I'm saying, because I don't think that 32 more attainable.

RJ Campbell:

I'm gonna tell you Right more to you.

Coach Dustin:

Alright. Well, how much is six Ferraris cost? Figure out what that looks like. So, and I don't know what a Ferrari cost, I'm gonna say a hundred thousand dollars, right? So now it's six hundred thousand dollars. Okay, cool, do people have six hundred thousand dollars? Yes, all right, great, how did they get that? Let's go talk to those people. Let's figure out what they did. Let's go study. How much work did they have to put into it, all of that stuff that goes into? That's how you believe it, because you see that it's been done right.

Coach Dustin:

If podcasts never existed before and we didn't even know the term and our J and I said we're gonna do what will this? And there was no path for us, would we really be here where we are today? We study the people that are in front of us so, honestly, we can rise above them, everybody I coach. I want them to be more successful than I am in every aspect. I want them to learn from the mistakes I have. I use RJ to learn from the mistakes he had as a parent. You know there was when his first grader was having challenges right, and I've learned that, not to necessarily make me a better father than him, but to maybe go faster through that challenge. I think that's the best way to say that. That's very true, yep, so that's one way we find out. Belief is let's find the people, let's see it to believe it. Right, we're in Missouri, baby. It's to show me, state, show me that this is happening and where to find it at.

RJ Campbell:

So now we fully believe it, the how starts to show up. Next, one of the things I had written down was so, guys, you can picture this, everybody has had this leader, this somebody that you worked for a coach, a parent their belief is contagious. They are so passionate this pastor that I was listening to the other day, he was so passionate that it was 100% contagious. So that leader, that dynamic leader that people talk about it's they're dynamic, not because they're putting just a load of crap, but they're using the right words. Man, would you really, really believe in what you're doing? Yeah, you talk about all boats rising, those people that work for you.

RJ Campbell:

A lot of us are business owners. That's people that listen to this podcast. Man, when you are passionate about what you're doing in your business, or your plan for next year, or the new product we're launching, or you're passionate about your relationship with your kids or your relationship with your wife, they feel that passion. They do, and that is super contagious and that comes from that strong belief. And I know we're talking about, with belief, the how follows. They'll see that too.

Coach Dustin:

And that's also very dangerous on the flip side too and I never go dark, most of the time that's the opposite Yet the feeling you have about the belief is extremely contagious, like Arjun just said. So what if you don't believe it? And you're trying to get your salespeople to double their revenue? Right, if John was one of my sales guys, yeah, you need to go out there and you need to double this revenue, and you can do it. And I don't believe it. Why would John believe it?

RJ Campbell:

Right and I've worked for those leaders. Yeah, absolutely.

Coach Dustin:

You worked for those bosses. I will say they're not leaders, those bosses.

RJ Campbell:

Yeah, correct, absolutely true. I've worked for those where they come out with the new goals and they raised everybody's quotas by 80%, and you know they don't believe You're looking back thinking, hmm, what's wrong with this company that they're trying to drive that kind of short term revenue? Yeah, you know they don't believe it either. They're just coming through as a dictator. Yeah, yeah.

Coach Dustin:

But I'm going to bring this into the parent world and one of the, I think an amazing movie in our journey, Hades Day, which makes me feel questioned a lot of time. I know where he's going the pursuit of happiness, Will Smith Stupid ending, Great movie. Will Smith is playing basketball with his son in that movie and he says maybe you should study hard because you're probably going to be not an athlete like me, right when he's shooting that basket. And then he stops himself because he knows his right thing. Don't you ever let someone else take the belief away from you. Dads, we do that to our kids on a daily basis. We do that to our staff on a daily basis. Of course, we probably do it to our spouses on a daily basis, but, man, in my opinion, the ones that have the impact the most are our kids. Because it's your programming, then and this is, I'm 100% guilty of it, we are all guilty of it, and yet it's something that we should really want to be watching.

RJ Campbell:

So we're talking about that. As a parent, we'll go back to the. You know, when you believe the how follows, people will ask us guys in the council, people that listen to this podcast, people on the Facebook group, yeah, how do I be a better father? And that question back is do you believe you can be a better father? You have to believe it. If you're like, yes, I know I can be better, all right, how? I mean the house will then show up. You truly believe, yes. Part of that question is what do you mean by a better father? There's where the how follows. Well, whatever that is, I don't spend enough time with my children. Whatever that reason is, you don't think you can improve. That's how it starts driving those house Absolutely. I mean this is again. It's kind of simple. When Dustin's coached through this little nugget out the other day, it's like, wow, where there's belief, the how will follow.

Coach Dustin:

And then, if you follow me, I did this from the tips from the truck today actually, but this is not new in life alter. I have my coaches, great, but this is not new in life altering. So then, we've even talked about it before. Honestly, a lot of the journey that we take people down through, the journey of the balance business, that curriculum we have, is asking these right questions to really see if they believe that, like, can you be a better father, do you believe that, right, where we're asking these questions constantly for them to actually believe it, for the how to show up. But it was just. Sometimes, when you hear things differently, it makes you think differently, right? So that's why I thought today was so important to come out with this, because, again, this is planning season. If it's not planning season, it should be planning season, right? 2024 is really right around the corner. What should you be doing for the next 90 days to make 2024 a different year for you, and do you believe, if you did that for 90 days, what it changed?

RJ Campbell:

And when you really believe, it's another one for you guys. Your resilience and your self-confidence because you believe it. I mean, we've all heard these stories, sam Walton stories I don't even know what it is, you know bankrupt 17 times, starting one retail operation after another, but he believed no, I can figure out what this formula is, colonel Sanders. One restaurant after another, but he believed, oh, no, we can get there, I can do this. His resilience, the self-confidence because the belief is so strong, you really really believe any of these pillars, wherever you think 2024, if we say that's what it is, that you want to improve and you really believe, okay, the first one may not work, but you're not going to give up. That's the resilience and self-confidence that will come with that Ironclad belief that, yes, this is possible and we can do it.

Coach Dustin:

And this is how and this is the next how- so what I trust just happened is a light bulb popped above your head because you got the idea, but to bring that light bulb into it. How many times did he fail to create that light bulb Right? Isn't the story like 99 times or 999 times or something like that? Yeah, yeah.

RJ Campbell:

And when I asked about that, you talk about resilience. When they asked, like man, you had another failure and they say why do you keep going? He says that wasn't failure, I just eliminated another option that doesn't work and I'm going to keep eliminating the ones that don't work until I find the one that does. He believed.

Coach Dustin:

He believed in something that didn't exist, which. How crazy is that? Right, right, yeah, I'm telling you to believe in something that does exist and that I can show you the path for. So let's have that belief and if not, we're here to help. You know, that's what this shows for. Keep listening, go find people to do that. Dad's belief is important, right, it's the small f in faith, if you will. We have to have faith in it, and that's how we'll show up. So if we're struggling, we have to have.

RJ Campbell:

So, guys, this is yeah, this is the example of. You know, this is the journey of the balanced business. Dad, this all came about this week. If this is we didn't know it, we're not the experts. We're learning it as we go along. We're relying on other dads, other coaches. We have these conversations and this is one of them. We have to make an episode about this one, because this is something that we're doing. We're just learning. We just had that aha moment. So, here it is.

Coach Dustin:

Yeah, all right guys. Thank you so much for tuning in to this episode. Like I said, I want you to stop whatever you're doing right now once this episode's over and really question is there something that I'm struggling with? The how on? Work it backwards. I want something and I don't know how, and let's back it up and figure out where the belief is. Ask yourself that question right now and, as always, we can continue this on the Facebook group. Go to dadupgroupcom. You can join the Facebook group right there. I would love to see how you have found the belief in certain things where the how has showed up, because I know there's it's been there for us as well, and I think that's what we got.

RJ Campbell:

RJ, you got any of them. I think that's it Wraps up a Tuesday, Okay guys make it a great week.

Coach Dustin:

It's vacation time, so we will see you next week. We are out.
